Flying into Clayoquot, you spend twenty minutes watching old-growth rainforest give way to nothing — no roads, no clearings, just trees running all the way to the Pacific. Then the floatplane sets down on the water and you're in it.

The lodge sits in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — 350,000 acres of old-growth rainforest, river estuaries, and Pacific coastline. Most people know Clayoquot Sound because of Tofino, the surf town on its southern edge. Fewer make it to the lodge, which is the point.

Twenty-five canvas tents run along the Clayoquot River — wood-burning stoves, river sounds, actual beds with proper linens. The central lodge is where meals happen, and the food is worth talking about. Almost everything comes from the on-site organic garden or from what's caught, foraged, or sourced nearby. It's a Relais & Châteaux property, which tells you what to expect in the kitchen.

The programming covers serious ground without the scramble. Horseback riding through old-growth forest. River rafting. Kayaking the fjords. Whale watching. Guided bear viewing on the estuary flats. Surfing at Long Beach when the swell cooperates. All of it is included, and all of it goes with a guide who actually knows what you're looking at. Cell service doesn't exist here. No wi-fi worth mentioning. That takes a day to settle into, and then it's the best thing about the place.

Season runs May through October. The shoulder months — May and June, September and October — are quieter, often better for wildlife, and meaningfully less expensive than peak summer. July and August fill well in advance.

The obvious pairing: a few nights in Tofino before or after. Long Beach, the food scene, the surfing. One of Canada's best coastal towns as a warm-up or wind-down, then the lodge for the wilderness piece. BC's west coast can hold its own against anything.
